Stewardship Index for Specialty Crops
The Stewardship Index for Specialty Crops (SISC) is helping to answer the complex question of what sustainability means for producers and consumers of specialty crops (fruits, vegetables and nuts). The multi-stakeholder coalition of producers, buyers and public interests groups collaborates to develop a suite of outcomes-focused metrics that enable producers to benchmark, compare and communicate their own performance, and provides a common language for supply chains to work together to improve the stewardship of farming practices and communicate that continual improvement all the way from the farmer to the consumer. We regard sustainability as an ongoing commitment to advancing environmental, social and economic values and therefore aim to provide common tools to help all participants implement and communicate clearly about sustainability activities, rather than define who or what is “sustainable.” For more information, visit www.stewardshipindex.org.
